Having a custom outfit made in Benin

A custom outfit starts with a clear conversation with the tailor. Whether you are preparing for an occasion or want a piece made during your stay in Benin, discussing the design, fabric and timeline helps define a realistic order.

Explain the design and its purpose

Prepare a photo, sketch or description. Explain the occasion, preferred fit and details that matter to you: length, sleeves, lining, fastening or pockets. A picture starts a discussion; it does not guarantee an identical result without agreement on materials and technique.

On VilaWa, read the service listings and provider profile. Ask whether they make that type of garment and can show relevant examples. An alteration and a garment made from scratch involve different work.

Who supplies the fabric and accessories?

Explain whether you will bring the fabric or want the provider to supply it. Ask how much is needed and which accessories to buy before purchasing anything. The fabric can affect how a design fits and what is practical to make.

Check what the quote includes: sewing, lining, accessories, fittings and any alterations. Confirm the price for your project rather than relying only on the advertised starting price.

Arrange measurements and fittings

Ask how measurements will be taken and whether one or more fittings are needed. If you are booking from abroad, agree what can be prepared remotely and what must wait until you arrive.

Do not assume rough measurements will be sufficient. Follow the provider’s instructions and agree on the meeting location. Share the personal details needed for the order directly in your conversation.

Agree a timeline that fits your stay

Explain from the start when you need the finished outfit. Ask the provider to confirm whether they can complete the project within that timeframe. An appointment request is not a delivery guarantee.

Allow for the necessary stages before departure: measurements, fitting, adjustments and collection. VilaWa appointments use Benin time (UTC+1).

Questions to settle before placing the order

No deposit is required to send a request on VilaWa. Any advance payment for the order is agreed directly with the provider, with clear terms. Keep a written record of the agreement before work begins.

  • Which design and finishing details are agreed?
  • Who supplies the fabric, how much is needed and which accessories are included?
  • What is the agreed total price and what does it cover?
  • When will measurements, fittings and collection take place?
  • How will adjustments, changes or cancellation be handled?
